Rhodes
The city of Rhodes is located on the island of the same name, and is one of the more affluent cities in Greece. Tourism is the main industry here, as the ancient history and landmarks, combined with Greek island charm make this a great destination for visitors. There is also some agricultural and other services industries, but the main source of wealth for Rhodes continues to be tourism. If you want a modern European city that has managed to preserve it’s ancient history, Rhodes is a great place to visit.
Heraklion
Heraklion is the largest city on the island of Crete, which is the largest Greek island. As you can imagine, the capital of such an ancient and popular island is a popular tourist destination, which brings in a lot of money to the locals and increases the standard of living compared to the rest of the country. Beyond that, the is a University in the city, which helps to create a favorable business climate and improve the city and the island’s wealth. Heraklion is also well connected to the rest of the island of Crete by road and to Europe and the Middeteranian world through the international airport.
Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is Greece’s second-largest city and has over 1 million inhabitants in its metro area, making it an economic and political force for the region. It’s located close to Bulgaria and Macedonia, which makes its port very popular for international cargo shipping and brings in a lot of jobs and money to the local economy. Beyond the port, the city is a major tourist destination, especially for cruises and houses some of the country’s most prominent companies. Thessaloniki has been an important and affluent city since the Roman days and manages to remain on the economic map, both in Greece and the Balkans.
Athens
It should come as no surprise that Athens is the wealthiest city in Greece. The capital is by far the most populous city and houses the most important institution of the Greek state. The port Piraeus is one of Europe’s most voluminous ports and the city is a key economic center for South-Eastern Europe. On top of that, there are numerous companies with headquarters in Athens, many outsourcing and IT services businesses have begun operating there and there is also tourism. Athens is one of the world’s most visited cities. Overall, the quality of life and salaries here are much higher than anywhere else in Greece.
